Sorting by colour wins for display builders. Sorting by shape wins for anyone who builds from imagination. Sorting by nothing wins for people with under 20,000 parts and a good memory.
The clearest finding: the collection size where a system becomes mandatory is around 30,000 parts. Below that, a bin dive is faster than a walk to the shelf.
Whatever you choose, keep a small 'active build' tray. Everyone who reported being happy with their setup had one.
